On a live wire right up off the street You and I should meet It was '"dinnertime". The reason Mariah thought of dinnertime at Darmon in quotation marks was a pretty simple reason, everyone just drifted in and out, grabbing what they wanted to eat before heading off to a party or something and get smashed out of their mind before waking up the next morning and going to class wearing sunglasses. Mariah was different in two respects, she actually sat down to eat her food in the dinning hall (the reason for the dinning hall was that, right? it wasn't the cafeteria), and because she didn't party so she had nowhere to rush off to. She didn't feel left out or anything, not really, as long as she had a notebook and pencil she could at least pretend for a little while that the world didn't really matter.
The sun was just setting, tinging the sky a purple-pink color with a fringe of yellow as Mariah glanced away from the window to the notebook sitting in front of her. Her plate, which was still half-empty sat away from her, like she didn't even care if she ate. Mariah sighed as she scratched a few things out on the paper and then set the pencil down. She just wasn't in the mood right now. She was thinking too much, usually that was a good thing, that helped most of the time. But she wasn't thinking about things to write, she was thinking about things going on in the actual world around her.
She was also surprised to find herself thinking about her sister. Mariah found Livvy's activities a bit self-destructive in every way, from the drinking to the partying to the sleeping with random guys. Mariah was sure their father didn't know about any of it, or else he would probably take both of them and throw them into a nunnery. Though she hesitated to admit it, since to her Livvy was the strong one, Mariah was actually worried about her. She would probably never bring it up to LIvvy since she was quite sure Livvy would just say something along the lines of "you don't know anything, go back to writing", though her actual words would contain a few more swear words.
Mariah didn't think about her own faults and her own, though barely there, self-destructive behavior. She ignored them because they weren't as important as other people's, she was dead set on that. Gabe was struggling with something in his life, Aja had practically married herself to Aaron, and then her sister seemed to have the biggest problems. Mariah smiled sadly, those were pretty much all the people she considered 'friends' though her sister had become more of an acquaintence. Sad really. She glanced around the dinning hall, some people were sitting like her eating, while others were just grabing things to eat, eating it quickly then rushing out to meet the world.

A soft sigh slipped through Jack's lips as he made his way to the dining room. He was starving, and it had been several hours since he had last eaten. He had skipped lunch, because he had been busy with a photo shoot, and he felt that getting amazing pictures was more important than satiating his hunger. Immediately after the photo shoot had ended, he had met up with his sisters Layla and Grace to do a bit of shopping. Layla's birthday was this coming Saturday, and Jack had been determined to buy her something nice. Instead of shopping by himself and screwing up with the present, he had decided to let his sisters come with him, so that Layla could pick out her own present. Of course, Grace had wanted something as well, and Jack most certainly did not mind. He had obviously bought Grace a little something as well, simply for being such an amazing younger sibling.
After the shopping had been completed, Layla and Grace went off on their own and Jack returned to his dorm to catch a quick nap. He had trouble sleeping the night before, mainly because his mind had been racing. So many thoughts had overwhelmed him the previous night, and he had spent the majority of the night staring up at his ceiling, wishing that he could somehow turn his brain off so that he could get some sleep. However, it had not worked out that way, and Jack had spent most of the day dragging himself and forcing himself to stay awake. He had woken to find that he had been asleep for an hour and a half, and that it was dinner time. He licked his lips, imagining what delicious food had been cooked for the evening. He crawled out of bed, quickly got dressed, and hurriedly made his way down the stairs and towards the dining room. He inhaled the amazing scent of the mouth-watering food, before taking his place in line.
A few moments later, he had received his food, and he scanned the dining room for a place to sit. He didn't feel like eating alone, and the only person he spotted that he even wanted to talk to at the moment was Mariah. So, without further ado, he walked over to where she was sitting, placed his tray onto the table, and plopped down into the seat next to her. "Hope I'm not interrupting you or anything." he said, before taking a bite of his grilled cheese with tomato sandwich. He hoped that what he was eating wouldn't offend Mariah, because if he remembered correctly, she was a vegan. Even though Jack wore leather, he did not believe in killing animals for fur. Cows were already being slaughtered for beef, so he didn't see a reason to not use the hide to make fashionable clothing. However, killing minks just to make a fur coat was absurd. On a live wire right up off the street You and I should meet Mariah was a bit shocked when a voice shattered into her mind. She winched slightly, and glanced around, a bit timidly to anyone watching closely enough. She didn't know why she felt this timid, maybe it was because she had been caught not writing or maybe it was because she had been thinking about something she regularly didn't. Like when someone would tell you not to think about a purple elephant, and then you did but you didn't want to admit it for fear of just being like everyone else. Something like that, if Mariah was thinking a bit more coherently she would have thought of a better reason for reacting the way she had, oh well.
The voice that had shattered the introspective thoughts belonged to a most intriguing fellow named Tristan James, Jack to his close friends. And Mariah counted herself very lucky to be one of those close friends. They had a solid friendship, more solid then most people had with their friends that they had with folks they knew all their lives. And what surprised Mariah the most was that she hadn't included Jack in her thoughts about her few close relationships. It was probably because Jack was set apart from the rest because their relationship, at least to Mariah, was harder to describe.
There was the upper layer which was their close friendship, they knew each other quite well, their strengths and weaknesses, a few of each other secrets, etc, etc. Underneath that was the innocent flirtation that they played around with. Mariah was usually clamed up when it came to anything remotely like flirtation but Jack was easy going so she was able to mess around with, playful touches, comments about each other that would be taken by most others as obvious signs of love, and even awkward moments that dissolved away into uncomfortable laughter. And then the third layer, which Mariah was sure that she was the only one in their duo that felt this way. She liked him, she feared using the 'love' words since it seemed too strong, she wanted to be more then friends but that was what stopped her. Their friendship. She didn't want to ruin it and she wanted to see him happy, and she knew she sucked at romantic relationships. She was happy when he was happy, even if that meant seeing him in another relationship with another person. It tore at her heart like vulture's talons. But he was happy so she never showed her sadness.
She relized she had sat there for a few seconds without responded to him, he had already sat down and began to eat his cheese sandwich. "Nope, not at all," She said in a nonchalant voice. Mariah was always surprised how she could play it off so well, that she wasn't affected by him in any way, she should have been an actress. "I was just having a case of writers block," She said, glancing down at her notebook. Now that was a lie, she ahd all the ideas right there in her head, all she had to do was pick up the pencil and begin to write, but not right now. Not with Jack right there.
